LAUREL HOUSE LEG RALLY
2008.03.12 - 11:32 PM6 months has passed since the occupation of Laurel House, a drop-in centre for people suffering from mental illness, stopped the BC government from closing its doors. Next week the Vancouver Island Health Authority will shut the doors, claiming there are no alternatives. Recently the Mayor of Victoria released a report that called for more community outreach programs to help people suffering with mental illness. This report concluded that mental illeness, homelessness, and drug addition must be addressed in unison. This report was put out by the Task Force on Homelessness, Mental Health, and Drug Addiction which included representatives from the Vancouver Island Health Authority which is closing Laurel House. A rally at the BC legislature echoes the feeling that this valuable community resource helps to keep people off the streets. BC NDP leader Carole James speaks along with several MLAs, a few of the Laurel House members, and esteemed Psychiatrist Dr. McMaster.

New Supportive Housing in Victoria
2008.01.23 - 08:34 PM170 supportive and afforduble unit will be created at the expense of displacing 14 families; some of who are visuallyimparted to physically challenged and existing way below the poverty line. The housing on Humbolt was built orginally by the CNIB community for its own members who currntly still occopy the buildings. This is where 55 supportive housing units willl be built/ Will 14 of these units be built for the current tentats or will they become displaced.
The current emergency shelter which is also the biggest one on south Vancouver island will be shut down in the next few months and that building will be converted to more supportive housing units. The shelter it self will be relocated to the north end of the down town core some where in the middle of what is known as the rock bay area or aka the sex trade stroll. This is out of sight and then out of minds of the tourist and down town businesses. It is also more then one kilometre away from the medical, legal services, employment, income assistance offices, soup kitchen and main bus routes.
