It's Getting Cold Again

It's that time of year again. The leaves are turning colors and falling from the trees. The wind is getting colder and the rain heavier. It's time to pack up the tent and move inside.

I've a long term street kid. I've spent many a night and day digging in dumpsters and flailing down alleys. I've stayed in the most decrepit squats and tent cities. I've panhandled I've merched. I first came down here at 14 but didn't end up stuck down here until I was 16. I'm now almost 22. I've watched many people come from this scene we like to call the "GONG SHOW" some cleaning up there act for what ever personal reason, some going to jail for a long time or getting sent back home and even some dieing or being killed. I got out of here for a year.

I knew you were smoking pot, doing drugs and getting high.
I never thought that you would die.
When you were straight you were the sweetest guy,
But you became so mean whenever you got high.

I saw you waste money, I saw you waste away;
I guess you were already half dead when you died that day.
I watched you climb the ladder till you were hooked on cocaine.
Always stoned, covering up yourself, hiding all your pain.

Drugs were your safe haven, a place for you to hide,
And most of the time I jsut went along for the ride.
The path became rough and I lost you on the way;

A picture of you I hold as I cry.
Why did you have to die?
Somethings were said that night,
That started a rumble we'd all fight.

Some guy got mad, pulled out a knife,
That's how you lost your life.
You fell to the ground, and I held you tight.
But still I lost you that night.

The things I meant to say, I pray you already knew,
How much I really cared for you.
A river of tears I cried that night,
Another battle you did fight.

This one you lost. DOA was the call,
I saw your body still slim and tall.
With a tag on your toe they took you away.
