Housing Not War Rally update.

2008.02.13 - 12:25 PM

Last Thursday about 150 anti-war pro-housing advocates rallied out front of Conservative Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's office, located on the 24th floor of the Sun Life building at 150 King St. W., in the heart of the financial district of downtown Toronto.
The crowd had come together to bring attention to their disapproval of the current war in Afghanistan and to demand that the billions of dollars of taxpayers money be re appropriated to fund humanitarian causes such as housing and health care. The event was co-hosted by the Toronto Disaster Relief Committee and the Canadian Peace Alliance. 151 organizations signed on to endorse the event also.
The rally began at the corner of Bay and King St. at nooon and hosted a variety of speakers and performers including; ranting and raving by the Raging Grannies, spoken work poetry by Gypsy Eyes, award winning journalist and writer Linda McQuaig, street nurse Cathy Crowe, even local NDP politicians Gord Perks, Cheri DiNovo and Peggy Nash adressed the crowd and demanded more funding for homes, not bombs.
The group attempted to deliver a letter and copy of the signed petition to Mr. Flaherty's office but were denied entry by security and police forces. In an interesting turn of events MP Peggy Nash offered to hand deliver the envelope to Jim Flaherty on the floor of the House of Commons.

Video footage of the entire event will be posted on www.homelessnation.org tomorrow morning.
