NDP CALLS FOR NATIONAL STATE OF EMERGENCY ON HOMELESSNESS CRISIS
OTTAWA – NDP Leader Jack Layton today called on
the Conservative government to declare a national
state of emergency. “The rising number of
homeless people on the streets of this country is
a disgrace and we need federal action now to
establish emergency shelters and put money into
essential services to keep people safe this
winter.
“Winter has barely begun, and Calgary has already
seen three deaths as a result of homelessness.
If we don’t act now, what will happen when the
worst of winter sets in? asked NDP Poverty
critic Tony Martin (Sault Ste. Marie). Martin
has been crossing the country on an “End Poverty
in Canada tour.
“Despite Alberta’s booming economy, Calgary has
the highest number of homeless people in Canada.
They have already been forced to use the
Saddledome to provide shelter for the hundreds of
people who had been left out in the cold,
continued Martin. “We have a crisis on our hands
that we are not responding to. With a
$13-billion surplus, it just doesn't make sense.
According to Human Resources and Social
Development Canada there are 150,000 to 250,000
people in Canada living on the street right now.
Declaring a state of emergency will give the
federal government the power to immediately
establish emergency shelters and allocate the
money necessary for essential services.
“Declaring a state of emergency will allow us to
deal with the crisis we are facing and will also
serve as a wake-up call for the federal
government on the need to set up a national
housing program so the travesty of homelessness
will end, said NDP Homelessness critic Irene
Mathyssen.
“Average Canadians feel that Canada’s
homelessness crisis exposes a deep social
injustice in one of the wealthiest countries in
the world, and it is time to address it once and
for all, said Layton.

What do people think of what the NDP are saying about us?
Okay now that we have heard one more time about the need for more shelters and the growing number of people out on the streets how about some of the actions to stop more and more people from ending up homeless. Why doesn't the government bring back the subsidize housing for all people. I personal think that creating more shelters is not the only solution.

I went to a Homeless conference that was being sponsored by SPARC last month in Vancouver; where I learned that right now that there are only one hundred and sixty agencies throughout BC and the Yukon that are really struggling to help the First Nations community; but unfortunately none of them have the dollars to do this they claim so who has the dollars?

cela n’a aucun sens. »

Selon Ressources humaines et Développement social
Canada, il y a entre 150 000 et 250 000 sans-abri
au Canada en ce moment. En déclarant un état
d’urgence, le gouvernement fédéral pourrait
établir des refuges d’urgence immédiatement et
allouer les fonds nécessaires pour les services
essentiels.

toutes », a dit M. Layton.

This is the same talking heads bullshit that Jack has been going on about since TDRC yapped about homelessness being a "National Disaster".

The bottom line is this:

HOMELESSNESS IS PREVENTABLE.

1) There's no reason squatting is illegal other than corporate greed.

2) There's no reason for the lack of housing other than government ineptitude and neglect. If Isreal, a poor nation in 1950's, could HOUSE thousands of immigrants per month somebody please tell me why the wealthiest nations in the world, can't.

3) There's no reason that almost every city government in this country has empty buildings that have heat, hydro and water yet remain empty.

It's an abomination and an outrage. There doesn't need to be a "shelter system"--there needs to be a few emergency shelters in urban areas only for overflow.

SHELTERS ARE NOT HOMES!!!!!
