Renoviction

What happens when your landlord kicks you out of your home and raises the rent dramatically after you're gone?
This ever increasing phenomenon is happening all over Canada, resulting in homelessness, extreme poverty, etc.

Good film, depressing topic.
Hard to find an answer to the problem... turn more property into public housing? Does that mean the province takes on those costs of ownership and upkeep? Seems like most provinces are having enough time balancing their budgets as is... would taxes be raised to counter those costs?
Enforce stricter tenant protection laws?
With more laws and lower profits people might not want to invest in housing and then fewer apartments get built, and rent goes up...
I think that an underlying problem in this situation and in this society is that everything is driven by profit. Unnecessary profit. Making a tidy sum isn't enough. Profits always have to go up and up. Companies are looked down upon if they don't make more and more money each year. Millions have to become billions.
It's all about greed.
Landlords should make a return on their investment, but they shouldn't be allowed to kick people out just to raise rents and make more money.
Something is wrong.
Offering more public housing is one of the solutions, for sure. Think about the money the government spends on the police force - its officers busy harassing people who live on the streets, for instance - or shelters, surveys about homelessness, studies about homelessness, the Olympic city......
Priorities, priorities.
You're right, Chris, it's all about greed.
Guess what? I am making more headway with BC Housing because I am being HONEST and SPECIFIC in how I am interacting with them. I sent a personal letter describing my situation and medical records - it's like getting on Disability Allowance, the more evidence you have, the more conviction there is. Also, who doesn't appreciate honesty and openness? As well I make myself more "marketable" because I don't come with the complications of addiction and being irresponsible with my life. Being healthy is good! Choices I make and bad habits I (and anyone really) can avoid like smoking drinking too much and doing drugs instantly makes a person more easy to house. For the severely entrenched addicts, that is what detox is for - I have seen, more like cleaned, time and time again, suites in apartments where addicts lived and just abused the privilege as it were - sure it is do-able to get clean this way, but rare, the place just becomes a flop house and a token to trade for dope. This is what I have found time and time again, When people see you are making genuine, sustained effort, week after week, month after month, year after year, they WILL come to help you, but you gotta prove yourself first. I totally agree with that. Want God to bless your efforts give him some to bless!
Bird: I agree that it's important to respect the property you live in, etc.
Now, the people in this film are just people like you and me, they don't drink, they don't use, they're friendly, law-abiding citizens and yet they're kicked out of their homes because of GREED.
GREED, GREED, GREED. It's a PANDEMIC!
