New Transitional Residence

2008.05.13 - 2:44 PM

Work has begun on a new transitional residence in Toronto.

The New Edwin Hotel, located at 650 Queen Street East, was recently purchased by WoodGreen Community Services and is hoping to open its doors by this time next year. The purchase of the building was funded by several levels of goverment.

The residence will feature private rooms with kitchens, bathrooms and sleeping areas. On staff will be therapists, addiction counsellors, medical experts, and security personal. People will be encouraged to use the hotel as a starting point to find their own permanent housing and as a base to seek employment opportunities and social services. People who use the facility for a longer period of time will be asked to join a work program to help contribute for their food and rent expenses. Thirty rooms will be made available.

The project has a working budget of $5 million.

Two other transitional projects have been planned:
Alternative Living Solutions Inc.
1908 Gerrard St. E.

and

Parkdale United Church Foundation Inc.
1355 King St. W.
