  • 2007 REVIEWED

Another year has passed and the situations facing homeless people on the streets of Victoria remain horrific.

109 people died while living homeless on the streets of Victoria in 2007, this statistic is based on the number of funeral services held at ‘Our Place’ which is the primary drop-in center in downtown Victoria. On average, 2 homeless people died every week in Victoria in 2007, up slightly from 106 deaths in 2006.

  • UPDATE TENT CITY CONSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGE

    City:
    Victoria
    News:
Today a BC Supreme Court Judge heard the City of Victoria's application for a discontinuation. In short this means that the city no longer wants to pursue charges against homeless people who set up a series of tent cities in 2005. In all likelyhood the reasoning behind this lastest ploy by the city is that they do not want to have their camping and loitering bylaws face the scrutiny of the Canadian Constituion and the Chart of Rights and Freedoms.

  • CAMP FOR HOMELESS DESTROYED BY GOVERNMENT

A tree-sit camp protected the forest around a sacred cave on the south end of Vancouver Island just outside of Victoria, BC. Many of the campers were homeless people, both local and from afar, and many travelers (including railroaders) stopped in for a day, week, month to support the protest. Then, on February 13, 2008, a massive police strike broke the camp! More than 60 police officers attacked the campers and kept the media out with a blockade. 3 people were arrested and charged with mischief. Moments later the excavators moved in and began destroying the forest.

  • HOMELESS NATION CELEBRATES 1 YEAR IN VICTORIA

I have been working on the streets of Victoria for one year now and have met many incredible homeless people who have opened themselves up to my camera and shared their point-of-view on this website. I have witnessed many giving people trying their best to help more than 1,200 homeless people counted in the small city. I have also been amazed at the lack of support and the arrogance of the many leaves of government as they do little while 106 people died on the street of Victoria in 2006. Premier Gordon Campbell and his BC Liberal party have dubbed British Columbia 'The Best Place on Earth' Victoria is the capital of this province. Here are a few excerpts from members of Homeless Nation living in Victoria.
