UPDATE TENT CITY CONSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGE

2007.09.05 - 8:30 PM
City:
Victoria
News:
Today a BC Supreme Court Judge heard the City of Victoria's application for a discontinuation. In short this means that the city no longer wants to pursue charges against homeless people who set up a series of tent cities in 2005. In all likelyhood the reasoning behind this lastest ploy by the city is that they do not want to have their camping and loitering bylaws face the scrutiny of the Canadian Constituion and the Chart of Rights and Freedoms. The Judge will announce a ruling on Friday and dependent upon that ruling THE NEW START DATE FOR THIS CONSTITUTIONAL CHALLENGE WILL BE 9:45 AM MONDAY SEPTEMBER 10, 2007 AT THE VICTORIA COURT HOUSE (BURDETT & BLANSCHARD) The public is welcome and support encouraged (Please respect the court rules since the homeless have a chance at winning this)
If you have any video, photos, or eye witness accounts for any of several TENT CITIES that were established over the past few years including at: St. Ann's Academy, BC Legislature Lawn (Camp Campbell), and/or Cridge Park please contact lawyers Catherine Boies Parker and Irene Faulkner at: (250)380-2788 E-mail: ifaulkner@ufpblaw.ca
The fate of any future tent cities in CANADA is at stake.
