More Budget Fall-Out

2008.02.28 - 4:40 PM

The CHRA report " Minimum Housing Wage 2006: Housing Continues to Move Out of Reach for Minimum Wage Workers" confirms that the working class is being squeezed out in this country. "In Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto a single parent must find a job paying almost three times the minimum wage in order to cover the rent for an average two-bedroom or three bedroom apartment." To say nothing of food and cost of living expenses. So once again the Tories are proven to just not care by once again by not raising the minimum wage. In a place like Toronto "... a single person must earn more than $14/hr to afford an average rent bachelor while a family needs a combined income of almost $25/hr, more than three times the average wage." By not raising this wage, cycles of poverty are effectively guaranteed for years to come. One of the conclusions reached by the report is "This shows that the “just get a job” mantra often directed at the poor or homeless is not a sufficient step to address the problem of housing affordability..." "CHRA" I'd like to highlight that portion, as many right-wingers use this catch-phrase as a means to downplay poverty issues by portraying the downtrodden as nothing more than lazy.
So is squatting the way to go? DIY Community Living? What are the impoverished supposed to do if the people who represent us will not help? I would love to hear your opinions, Nation. For inspiration, please visit this site "intraspec.ca" to see a great archive of homelessness articles as well as a Google search engine on homelessness issues (whoulda thunk it). Have a great day, Nation.

So is squatting the way to go?

Maybe. Whatever works.

DIY Community Living?

Perhaps. And, maybe Communal Do-It-Yourself Living.

What are the impoverished supposed to do if the people who represent us will not help?

Take the lead.
Look into ...
Feel all of our (your/my) feelings fully.
Breathe.
Meditate on patience.
See em-povver-richment and have-bun-dance as stories and let them go.
Re-present self and seek out like-minded individuals.
