Social workers calling for more provincial funding

POSTED AT 4:37 PM Friday, February 22

Social workers who care for the disabled say politicians are ignoring the crisis facing their industry.

They say a lack of provincial funding is leaving disabled Albertans without proper care and the situation is expected to get worse.

Social agencies say the province is not providing enough money to retain workers.

Some parents with disabled children are now feeling the pressure.

Adam Heighes is a father of two special needs children. He says he went 18 months without any support, even though he had contracts signed by the government. Heighes says he just could not find staff to do the work.

The biggest issue is wages. Care workers have post secondary education but they earn as much as fast food workers.

Montana Hancocks has worked with developmentally disabled adults for seven years. She says the quality of care is at risk.

Social agencies are banding together to lobby provincial candidates for greater funding.

They hope the pressure will turn the care of disabled Albertans into an election issue.

Hello J.H.

Thanks for your comments, I thinks it's only fair what they demand.

Anyway' I do support it.

Solidarity

By the way, NCAP is currently being set up in Ottawa, there's definitely an interest for it here. as you may knot, we wil have our founding meeting on March 25th and as I mentioned we are getting quite a bit of support for it now, so I guess it's all good and I think I am doing the right thing or I am doing something people want.

The next few months could be quite interesting and it will be totally different then fighting back against someone like ex Premier Ralph Klein although that was fun for me.

The challenge is different this time around, our coalition need to put up a good challenge ro all levels of government to get positive things happening for our homeless and poor, we have our support base from the NDP right there in the capital.

It should be interesting to say the least.l

Solidarity brother.
