"Bare" Mountain Tree Sit -- Media compilation installation #1: 14 Dec 2007
Rose Henry speaks about the destruction of the Spaet Mountain cave. (January 12, 2007)
This video presentation gives Rose's view of the "disgusting" proposals made by the provincial government to preserve the Spaet Mountain cave. Their plan: to surgically remove sections of the cave & reassemble them in a museum, thus "preserving" the site and allowing the associated First Nations to charge admission. When you consider that this cave is recognized as a sacred site by several local First Nations, the proposal's sleazy nature becomes startlingly blatant. "Disgusting" indeed, Rose.
The Spaet Mountain cave was destroyed on Nov 16, 2006 by work crews under the employ of LGB9 Development Corporation (perhaps more appropriately titled The Bear Mountain Development Company).
Find video footage of the destruction here. The Spaet Mountain cave was destroyed to make way for construction of the Bear Mountain Resort, a members-only luxury Golf & Country Club.
There is another sacred cave, known publicly as the Lanford Lake cave, which has been threatened by the development of a proposed freeway interchange (once named the Bear Mountain interchange), currently known as the Spencer Road interchange.(Map of Spencer Road Interchange.)
Video Tour of Langford Lake cave mouth and surrounding area.
This video gives a good look at the two mouths of the cave, as well as an extended 360 degree panoramic shot of the area around it. You can hear the cars zoom by on the highway, which is approximately 100m from the cave entrance and the tree-sit, which you can see in the background.
