Stone Soup Anyone?
While we're on the subject of good, cheap food, I submit my recipe for POTATO SOUP (Scottish style).
Big soup pot (6 quarts)
1 beef bone
cover with water & boil till meat falls off the bone - skim off bubbles - let bone cool & give to dog
2 or 3 onions - chopped
6 carrots - grated
1/2 turnip (rutabaga) - grated
5 or 6 large potatoes - cubed
Throw onions, carrots & turnip into pot and boil for about 20 minutes. Add potatoes and soup is ready when potatoes are cooked to your liking.
Add salt & pepper to taste - garnish with chopped green onions & parsley. My mom adds a splash of milk to her bowl so it cools down faster.
This is also really good if you add ginger and some hot peppers or some east indian spices if you like.

Sounds good and cheap. I love rutabaga's in soup but I won't buy 'em by the pound--too expensive. I wait 'til they're 99c each and they keep a LONG time and can be chopped up for the freezer!

Sounds great - definitely a keeper!
