When people think of free speech they quite often think of the 60's radicals such as Lenny Bruce and swearing. As a writer I quite often think of him. But it wasn't hate speech. I'm one of those people who think books like Mein Kamph should be out there solely for the purpose of discovering the madness inherent in its pages. I am from Northern Ireland. There is relative peace there now. But it didn't happen overnight. People who were abhorant to some were given the podium to explain their motives. This was part and parcel of the means to the peace.
Now, to Ami Goodman. And why was she coming to Canada? To talk about Medicare for f--ks sake. Very radical indeed. In Northern Ireland I had medi-care and basic dental care. All people, no matter their political or non-political view had entitlement to this. You'd think that Ami Goodman was some kind of a radical:an immoral anarchist type of person, and one to watch out for to be held up at the border and have the content of her laptop screened. Oh, she was going to talk about medi-care. I hear (please admonish me if I misconscrue her message here)yes, that she was talking about the poor joining the U.S army to basically get a job( and medi-care maybe). No doubt these new young solders could find themselves in incomprehensibe situations overseas - quite often to return to the U.S without getting any help with things like post trumatic stress. I read a recent article in the Manchester Guardian that said over twenty percent of the inmates in British jails are ex-military and that Britain is pretty lax in treating post-trumatic stress. Surely these things are connected. I wonder sometimes about how Canada treats its trumatised.
Oh, dear me, should I mention that the Olympics are coming up here soon in B.C. Or should I just say they will happen in the North West corner of Amerika. Sometimes I wonder if this heavy handed sense of security we are under is not some strange cross-dressing Dr. Strangelove/McCarthyist reincarnation.Maybe those-out-there (those aliens) have a plan to melt all the snow before the Olympics happen. Maybe a worse case scenerio would have them melting the whole world's snow with a universal doomsday snow melting machine. Those skiers of course could live underground and breed at will until the world freezes over again to repeat more cold(coldwar) conditions so that they may ski until heaven finally arrives and hell freezes over.
