Here's a question for all of you:

2008.10.17 - 9:44 PM

i was going through ontario's resources and let me tell you that from personal experience there are very few shelters for someone to go to if they're over 25. Me and jay have both lied about our ages to get into a shelter. we're just lucky to be able to pass for 24. lol.

so heres the question. why is it that on the resource page shelters of toronto are not listed. they have the 211 thing but i've dealt with them enough times to know that its one big fucking joke. of those of us who needs help and are actually willing to call in, who really in they're right mind is gonna sit on the pay fone for a minimum of 20 minutes? and then you are never really guaranteed that you're gonna find a place for the night. This is even more difficult if you're a couple seeing as how besides the youth shelters, there is only ONE co-ed shelter in Toronto and the only reason why its around is really for those of us who are Transgendered. not me personally just to be clear. anyways this shelter is still hard to get a hold of cuz you have to call the street helpline (which is not 211) to get them to connect you to them cuz they're direct number is unlisted. how the fuck are you supposed to get to a shelter thats unlisted in the phone book. its fucking ridiculous. its pathetic that there's more shelters for youth in toronto and surrounding area than there is for those of us who are over 25.

it doesn't matter, like was my case back in march that you turned 26 only 5 days prior. once you turn 26 places like covenant house are like sorry...we don't care...we cant help you. they pretty much did that to me.

and two months ago me and jay went there trying to get a bed for just one night cuz it was rainy and cold and we ended up having to ask them where a good place to sleep was...they couldn't even help us with that. a couple of street kids pointed the way. we ended up sleeping under some stairs at nathan phillips square.

the city of toronto is pathetic with helping young couples when they are over 25. there needs to be more help geared to people between the ages of 26-34 or 35. nothing like that currently exists. and there needs to be more co-ed shelters for this group.

Toronto and many other places figure that once you turn 25 you're responsible for yourself but what they haven't realized or don't want to realize is that homelessness and addiction, which often go hand in hand, don't discriminate. it doesn't matter if your over 25 when problems like addiction are in your life and usually when people have problems like this they usually have no where to go.

maybe toronto should pull the fuck up and take responsiblility for its citizens. we are human and deserve to be treated as such.

peace!
