Whats more important? Affordable housing or a new Campus

2008.04.29 - 5:27 PM

I found this story on the CFCN Calgary website today, I guess some people still don't realize that there is a housing crisis in this city or they just don't give a shit that those who are stuck in the shelters or on the street could use a place they could call home.

Another thing that piss me off is, they call the Salvation Army a temporary shelter, well I have some news for these people, there's no such thing as a temporary shelter in this city, you get stuck in the shelter system in Calgary and you are there for a long time unless you give up trying to find a place to live in cow town and decide to leave for good as I did

I am not saying that those students couldn't use a new campus, if these institutions choose to build it next door to the Sally, they are sending a message that they absolutely don't care about those who could use that land for affordable housing. One last comment, personally, I think building affordable housing on that land would make much more sense.

Amid the oil and gas towers, students may one day take their place in downtown Calgary.

A new urban campus is being proposed for the site behind city hall and next to the Salvation Army Centre of Hope, a temporary shelter.

The six groups championing the urban campus are the University of Calgary, the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, University of Lethbridge, Athabasca University, Bow Valley College, and the Calgary Board of Education.

There are discussions to include the Alberta College of Art and Design, and to hold classes at EnCana offices.

Alberta Learning says there is no financing for the project at this point.

The six institutions would like to see construction begin in 2010.

I've heard quite a bit about your organization lately,
but I'm unsure as to what is you do. Your website isn't...
descriptive? I find it to be filled with majority rhetoric,
and it's good rhetoric don't get me wrong. But what projects
are you all currently working on?

Aside from that, perhaps it would be best to ally with the students against the state rather then allowing the state to pit the poor and working poor against the students. Both have smiliar interests and there's much room for solidairty (in my opinon).

Good Luck
